This is an open star cluster “IC 2944” with an emission nebula located about 6,500 light-years away in the direction of “Centauri” and its surrounding areas. It is also known abroad as the “Running Chicken Nebula”.
Emission nebulae are nebulae that emit light from hydrogen gas ionized by ultraviolet radiation from young, massive stars, also called HII regions. According to the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the “Running Chicken Nebula” is actually divided into several line emission nebulae, and this image captures a region roughly five times the width and width of the full Moon's apparent diameter. That all this was captured in the photo.
The bright blue star near the center of the image is Lambda Centauri (κ Cen), and the up-and-down vertical structure that can be seen next to it is IC 2944. The brightest part of the nebula, the lower left, is called “IC 2948”, and it resembles the head of Chicken or ass, depending on the person. The three emission nebulae on the right side of the image are named “Gum 39,” “Gum 40,” and “Gum 41.”
This image was created based on data (using five types of optical filters) acquired by the “OmegaCAM” wide-angle camera mounted on the “VLT Survey Telescope (VST)” at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, operated by the European Southern Observatory. December 21, 2023. VST's observations in this region are part of ESO's large-scale 'VPHAS+' survey (VST Photometric H alpha Survey), which monitors stars and nebulae at visible wavelengths to understand how stars are born and die. From the level of the southern galaxy and the bulge.
