Intelligently balanced, Igor Levitt combines the spontaneity with the contemplative calm of works by Bach, Liszt, Berg and Busoni on his double album Fantasia.
Igor Levitt releases a double album collecting works from Bach to Busoni and from Liszt to Berg under the title “Fantasia”. It’s no news that Levit has a colorful, flexible stop. But he also knows how to use those qualities here with precise stylistic sensitivity. Above all, he successfully reconciles the element of fantasy contained in the title, the romantic idea of unpredictability and spontaneity, with the idea of contemplative calm. This is especially true of Liszt’s sonata, which Levitt performs without extremes, without any attempt at surprise. For him, extremes lie in the music itself, there is no need for additional effects. Levitt takes the nutritional value of music from the notes. This sounds coherent, thoughtful, convincing and intelligently balanced across the repertoire.
