Colorado has a big event coming up this weekend that will have you looking up at the night sky. it’s the Perseid meteor shower. The annual event will send bright trails of light across the night sky. Technically, the shower lasts from July 14 to September 1.

But the peak is expected this weekend with the most visible meteors appearing on August 12, so from Saturday to Sunday morning. This year could be a particularly vibrant show because the Moon will only be a sliver and the light pollution will be the least. Astronomers expect that it may be possible to see as many as 50 to 70 meteors per hour.

The only problem this year may be the monsoons It rises again this weekend It will provide the state with a lot of clouds, rain and thunderstorms late in the day. So it might be a battle to see meteors among the clouds.

The best time to view the Perseids on the Front Range is from 11pm each night until dawn the next day. Just look at the north-northeast sky, and if you move away from the city lights the view will be better.
