Featuring a bold color box designed with the game’s four primary colors, Color Square by Patrick Katona (play this!) saw our little guild’s table. Immediately noticeable was the bilingual presentation in German and English as well as the short but informative back text.
The content of the box consists of 5 small wooden blocks colored in red, blue, green, yellow and white. Jumbo 150 page board with interesting game boards printed on both sides. On the front, side A of the block is the standard game footprint. Side B with advanced game plans appears on the back of each game. Thus, up to 300 individual games can be used with the closed block.
Unfold, read, play
With twelve pages, the instructions are in no way confusing and allow for a straightforward start to the game. The game mechanics are as simple as they are ingenious. Already in the first pages of the Help, both the principle of the game and the basic flow of the game exploded.
In short: lock as many squares as possible. These are the colored square number fields with scores on the game board. It is now a matter of beating these “squares”. To do this, the results of the dice for the corresponding colors are entered and an attempt is made to multiply the numerical value in the middle first.
Color Square is not one of those dice games where one person plays and the others wait their turn. On the contrary: a dice roll consists of an active part and a passive part for the other players.
Whoever starts with the first roll is automatically the active one and chooses two of the four colored dice. These are now entered into one of the corresponding colored ‘squares’. Everyone else has to fill in the value of the small white dice. From here it continues.
Square!
When Square was first heard, the appeal of this game was reflected and the fun of the game spilled over into our test round. From here on out, garbage after garbage was celebrated. Who closes the next square, who gets the points and who might have miscalculated?
A certain amount of advance planning and quite desirable “cheating” in the plans of the Neighbors games, for which the arena is about to close, is now the focus as well as one’s own litter selection.
The tension continued until the last square. Since there are plus and minus points in the point assessment, it remains open until the last calculated game plan wins the game.
Is Color Square a good salon game?
The color box surprised us. What first seemed like a dice game in a cozy little group has turned into a fun and entertaining dice game of tactics. With its simple mechanics and the possibility of thwarting one plan or another for other players, the fun lasted for several rounds. Not least because of the different game variants of advanced and single player game missions. For example, simply keeping your game plan secret led to an entirely new variable and at times dramatically altered the tactics of individual players.
Color Square is a simple family game that is also perfect for learning how to add numbers between 4 and 24. Unfortunately, there is no deeper strategy and tactics, but than bingo And gimmick Like I will like the color box.
What disappointed us was the quality of the wooden blocks. Here only the eyes of the dice are printed. Especially with yellow dice, it can be hard to see the dice’s white eyes. This didn’t detract from the fun we had on our test rides, but in no way.
We positively noticed that people with red and green weakness can play too. Here, the red template is overlaid with black instead of white dots. It is a pity that this note is not on the packaging, but is only indicated in the instructions inside.
