Isanie Percussion Duo plays various percussion instruments and weaves a visually stunning, magical world full of melodies and colors.
Bird chirping does not exactly come to mind on drums. However, some of them are real masters of rhythm in their songs. In his piece “Chattering Birds,” composer Dai Fujikura makes the sounds of the finger cymbals chirp with their bell-like sounds. With such explorations into the broad field of percussion instruments, Leonie Klein and Isani Nakamura—together with the Isanie Percussion Duo—are very much in their element. Her joy of playing and experimenting is conveyed in every piece of contemporary repertoire on this CD: from Ursula Mamlouk, who passed away in 2016, to Peter Etvös and Toshio Hosokawa, to young composer Sarah Gloinarich, who combines drums and electronics. Here not only the charm of the orchestral range of percussion instruments is conveyed, but also their melodic and tonal potential. Absolutely magical and captivating when these talented people are at work.
