criticism

Volume 94 of the monthly series again presents two stories: on the one hand, Vader’s adventures continue, on the other hand, Yoda can now take part. In terms of graphic, everything is at the usual good level. The characters come on their own more than well (read: in detail) and the emotional drive of one or the other is readable. In addition, one cannot complain about the lack of detail in the fight scenes either.

As far as plot is concerned, however, the story around Yoda falls a little short again. Here, as with Obi-Wan before, they took the path of wanting to tell short stories about the Jedi Master. As with Obi-Wan Kenobi before, this one works more badly than well. So Yoda is allowed to rush to the aid of a planet in the time of the High Republic. In the back story, he was at Dagobah just before Luke arrived and remembers.

Since the back story is only three pages long, we can safely ignore it here (and it would actually be completely unnecessary in context, at least for the first part of the story we see here). In addition, the story is basically nothing new. Yoda defends a village, learning a lesson or two along the way. Unfortunately, this is seen too often.

You also have to ask yourself: the villagers radio Coruscant for help and it takes a few days for Yoda to arrive. After all, he did not forget the interplanetary interval and it is mentioned here too. Basically, Yoda only found rubble and dead bodies, because the villagers couldn’t hold out for long. So the story here was a little too “bending” for it to fit in somehow. At least Yoda’s lessons are funny as always, but not enough to tear the story apart at this point.

Basically the same thing here applies to the short stories about Obi-Wan: it’s nice to have it, but nothing special. It doesn’t offer the overarching Star Wars story or offer any deeper insights.

Vader’s story is a little better there, even if it was predictable at first. Because at Sabé’s behest, Vader confronted the Emperor—and only kissed him. Certainly the story of the films plays out differently and Vader doesn’t clash with the Emperor. Thus, the cliffhanger of the last volume fades completely to no effect.

At the very least, the throne room fight scene is nice to look at, even if one could complain that it’s a little twisted, and Sabé is left alive and sent on a mission with Vader. At least that requires some nods to the past and we’ll have to see where this all leads. In a final little scene, Ochi is allowed to reappear briefly – bringing another cliffhanger to Padmé’s maids. This isn’t really possible, because everyone except Sabi is already dead…

Well, on the other hand, the queen must have hundreds of maids, and the Sabé ranks were just doubles. Let’s see what you can benefit from.
