The solar powered butterfly was developed at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts as a Swiss technology based on an idea by Louis Palmer. The project aims to show a practical example of sustainable living without carbon dioxide emissions.
The project team visits schools and organizes local events to show the contribution residents can make to the climate. “With Solar Butterfly, we also want to do environmental education. Because everyone has the choice to be part of the problem or the solution.” So says project manager Louis Palmer, who became the first person to drive a solar-powered car around the world 15 years ago.
It is a unique concept worldwide: a fully self-contained tiny house with 40 square meter extendable wings made of solar cells. With these and other solar panels, the batteries of the electric car that pulls the caravan are charged. It’s also the world’s first tiny house made mostly of recycled PET bottles from the ocean.
The World Tour started in 2022 and is scheduled to be implemented in several stages by 2025. In 2022, 25,000 km have already been covered in 27 countries in Europe.
After a test drive, the second stage officially begins on April 3, 2023 from Lucerne and leads to Austria, Germany, England and across North America, from Halifax to Panama.
The route includes stops in 90 countries that Louis Palmer visited by electric car 15 years ago. At the stations, sustainable projects and events will be organized.

Swiss Engineering is supporting this project. From the point of view of the professional association, such innovations are essential: in order to raise awareness and promote the use of renewable energies – to secure the energy supply of the future.
