With 34 and 49 inches: new OLED gaming monitors from MSI

After the OLED train didn’t quite take off as quickly as initially thought last year, there’s a good chance things will look different this year. already in advance CES MSI announced its new OLED monitors. In the Las Vegas showroom, we were able to get a first look at the new hardware.

The new MSI MEG342C QD-OLED has a 34-inch curved panel with a curvature of 1800mm. The degree of immersion lags current models by 1000R. The resolution is the usual 3440 x 1440 pixels for this format, so no new sharpness recordings are achieved. Due to its design, the OLED panel guarantees very short response times, which MSI puts at 0.1ms. A maximum refresh rate of 175Hz is also available.

But gamers shouldn’t be the only ones to be happy with the wide OLED screen, according to MSI, color reproduction with a QD-OLED panel shouldn’t be neglected. The sRGB color space is covered by 139.7%, while DCI-P3 and AdobeRGB cover 99.3% and 97.8%, respectively. A DeltaE value of less than 2 should ensure high color accuracy. In order for the self-contrast range to be convincing, MSI uses a slightly reflective layer.

On the connectivity side, 2x HDMI 2.1 and a DisplayPort are available. Alternatively, the picture can also be played via USB Type-C. Laptops can be charged at 65W using the same port. A four-port USB hub is also integrated.

As an eye catcher, MSI has installed an RGB strip on the underside of the frame.

The second OLED newcomer is a step larger at 49 inches. The MEG 491C QD-OLED is also based on a QD-OLED panel with a resolution of 5120 x 1440 pixels, thus matching two 27-inch displays with WQHD resolution standing side by side. As is usual with such large sized devices, a curved panel is used. The bend here is also an average of 1800 mm. The housing is rather thin, as is the case with OLEDs, but it has a fairly bulky center block for the control electronics.

The fast response time of OLED technology is important for gamers, because 0.1ms must also be achieved here. With a maximum refresh rate of 240Hz, the 49-inch model here runs a bit faster than the new 34-inch model.

MSI does not provide a great deal of information about color reproduction, DeltaE less than 2 is only transmitted. Since quantum dot technology is used, large color spaces are expected. In HDR playback, OLED can of course play its cards. The MEG 491C QD-OLED is certified to DisplayHDR True Black 500 with a peak brightness of 1000 cd/m².

MSI has not provided any information yet on pricing for either device.
