What is Google Meet in the first place?
It was previously a paid members-only service and was called ‘Hangouts Meet’, but the name was changed in April 2020. In May of the same year, it started offering a free version, basically anyone with a Google account can use it.
However, compared to the paid version, the free version has limitations on the maximum number of participants, meeting time, etc. Also, the recording function cannot be used (as of October 2022). If you plan to use it for work, you can consider a paid plan.
A smartphone app is also provided (hereinafter, smartphone), and you can use Google Meet from your smartphone. You can also start Google Meet from Gmail or Google Calendar.
How to get started with Google Meet
There are three ways to start a web conference as an organizer on Google Meet. On a PC, it will start in a browser, but on a smartphone you will need Google Meet. Also, it cannot be used without an account and requires a Google account beforehand.
To join as a participant, simply click or tap on the web conference URL shared by the organizer.
1: When starting from Google Meet
First, I will explain how to do it on a computer.
On the Google Meet main screen, select Create New Meeting. Then click Start Meeting Now.
Then the meeting will start. After starting, share the web conference URL displayed at the bottom left of the screen with the participants, or send an email invitation to the participants from Add Users.
Here’s how to do it on your smartphone. When using a smartphone, launch the Google Meet app.
And since there’s “New” at the bottom left of the screen, start the meeting here. The rest of the process is about the same for computers.
2: When starting from Google Calendar
Now let’s talk about getting started with Google Calendar. First, let’s talk about how to do it on your computer.
Create an event for the date and time of your meeting. And adding google is dead.
After you add the members who will participate in the meeting, you can send the web conference URL to the participants via email. After confirming the contents, press “Save” to complete.
When participating in a web conference, select the event and select “Join Google Meet” to participate.
Next, I will explain the procedure on the smartphone.
First, in Google Calendar, click on the time zone of the day you want to hold the web conference. Since the event setup screen appears, add participants using Add User. And set up Google Meet with Video Conferencing Addition. After you are done with the settings, press “Save” at the top of the screen to finish.
3: When starting from Gmail
Finally, I will explain how to get started with Gmail. First, let’s talk about how to do it on your computer.
Click the Google Meet icon on the left side of the Gmail screen. After that, you can start the meeting with “Create New Meeting”.
Click “Start Now” to start the meeting.
By clicking on “Send Invitation”, you can send the URL of the web conference to the participants by e-mail.
Next, I will explain how to work with a smartphone.
After launching the Gmail app, there is a Google Meet icon at the bottom of the screen. From there, you can start a new web conference.
How to use Google Meet
This article will walk you through the steps on your computer.
How to share your screen
Screen sharing is a feature that allows you to share your screen with web conference participants. It can be used when you want to check what materials are available with all participants.
First, select the Screen Share icon at the bottom of the screen. Next, select the screen you want to share.
Your “full screen” shares full screen mode, i.e. the entire computer screen. The “window” is to share the window of each application such as Excel and the browser. “Tab” refers to each tab in the browser.
When you’re done sharing your screen, tap the “Stop Sharing” button at the top of the screen.
How to set the background
In Google Meet, you can also set the background. There is a ‘blur’ to blur the background, ‘Background’ to set a photo or video as background, and a ‘Filter’ to make the user’s face interesting.
When setting the background before the meeting starts, select the asterisk at the bottom right of the camera screen.
After that, the setting screen will appear, so click “Effect” in the middle and select the item you want to apply.
If you want to change the background after joining the meeting, tap the three-dot vertical leader at the bottom of the screen. If you select “Apply visual effects”, the background setting items will be displayed as before. Select the item you want to apply.
How to register
Registration is only available in the paid version.
First, tap on the three vertical dots at the bottom of the screen and select Record meeting.
Select “Start Recording”.
Then the recording will start and the word “REC” will appear in red in the top left of the screen. I’m recording while this is happening.
When you want to stop recording, tap on “Stop Recording” on the right side of the screen to stop recording. The recording data will be saved to the Google Drive of the person who started the recording.
way out
There is a phone sign at the bottom of the screen, so tap on it to leave the meeting.
Does Google Meet have a time limit?
Even with the free version, you can use the basic functions of Google Meet.
However, the meeting time is limited compared to the paid version. For example, when meeting with 3 or more people, the paid version can be kept for up to 24 hours, but the free version can only be kept for 1 hour.
In addition, there is an upper limit on the number of participants in a meeting, up to 100 people. Also, the free version does not allow you to record meetings or cancel noise.
If you are considering widespread use within your company, you should opt for a paid version that has no restrictions.
in the end
Google Meet is highly rated as a video conferencing service. It is easy to use, and you can start from your computer or smartphone. The ability to start an online meeting from Google Calendar or Gmail is a major feature not found in other web conferencing tools.
Get started fast and for free with a Google account. Why don’t you try it once?
