Review: Teunis van der Zwart – Horn & Piano

This album focuses on “Cor Basse”, i.e. deep horn, whose rich voice is impressively documented by Teunis van der Zwart.

At first glance a CD is suitable for a particular position, but at second glance a clear discovery and recommendation. Teunis van der Zwart worked on composer Jan Václav Stich, better known as Giovanni Punto, as part of his doctoral thesis, and has now derived a musical program from this documenting the entire richness of the century sound in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The emphasis is on the “base of the cor”, that is, the deep horn, because the mouthpiece is slightly larger in diameter than the oral parts of the higher vocal areas. In Alexander Melnikov (on two different historical statements) van der Zwart found a harmonious companion in arms. The production benefits from the fact that they are both experienced chamber musicians. The horn sounds warm and lyrical, but is also sharp in individual moments. An original and diverse album with two sovereign soloists.
