The magic of Sarah McDougall’s music is best demonstrated in clips for a special campaign she started in 2017: Under the tagline “Quick and Dirty,” she recorded primaries of her songs in her living room barefoot, without a mask and without any. Technical frills. It shows again: really good songs work even in their raw form, and by the way, in the case of the Canadian singer-songwriter with Swedish roots, the clear and beautiful sound comes out magnetically.
It’s been a long time. On her latest album, All The Hours I Have Left To Tell You Anything from 2018, she experimented with a bolder approach with style and mixing, appearing more powerful and poppy, but without overpowering her sense of song and message. “Falling,” for example, deals with the persistent feeling of crisis in the recent past in a new way: not grumbling and complaining, but emotional reflection with a modern twist. For example, Canadian internet platform Lullaby describes the single “Falling” as “upbeat” and attests that the artist on “All the Hours I Left To Tell You Anything” evolved from the popular rock music that preceded it in a refreshingly self-confident manner.
