Benfica have not defeated FC Porto in eight matches and this is the second worst series of shocks

The dark period began on August 24, 2019 with the defeat at Luz after the title in the previous season. Since then, the Eagles have lost five more matches, making two draws

The defeat in the Portuguese Cup against FC Porto, which canceled the competition, was followed by another defeat, now in the league, which added to Benfica’s shock with the rivals. Even a change of coach, with Jorge Jesus swapping for Nelson Verissimo, did not force a change in score.

In a very turbulent week, the Eagles lost twice against Porto and are already in an eight-game streak without being able to win. This is already the second worst Benfica sequence in the history of duels between the two teams, having been surpassed only by the nine games away from victories, which were played between January 30, 1988 and April 17, 1991.

The Reds’ last victory over the Whites and the Blues dates back to 2 March 2019, when Club da Luz were crowned champions, under Bruno Lagg – in January from Bês to replace Rui Vitoria. Lage beat FC Porto 2-1 at the Estadio do Dragao, but on August 24 of the same year, in the third round of the 2019/20 Championship, he did not avoid a 2-0 defeat at home.

From then on, Benfica fans were no longer able to re-establish themselves against the Blues and the Whites, the latter always under the leadership of Sérgio Conceição. Five more defeats and two draws followed. The two losing games at the end of 2021 turned the current streak into the second-worst streak, surpassing three of seven games, and highlighting many of the other six games without a win.

FC Porto became a real obstacle and left the darkest streak behind against the other opponent. With Sporting, Benfica have gone no more than five matches without winning. There are five such sequences, two of them always lose.
