500mm diameter: Giant fan greatly reduces temperature instead of side panel

Picture: Corsair

Corsair developed an RGB fan with a diameter of 500 mm. The single piece cuts a great figure as a case fan. Used as an alternative to a side panel, the temperature drops dramatically. What may seem strange at first glance may be a precursor to a trend.

General data of the giant fan

Nexus test in front of the cameras, hand-assembled fan placed in front of the camera. Its design is similar to the design of the LL series, which also includes the perimeter ring of the RGB LEDs. Corsair opened it up whether it was a lesson, a concept, or a joke. In principle, the fan is fully functional.

Only the printed performance information is incorrect: the maximum consumption of 36 watts turned out to be 10 watts measured. Reducing the maximum speed measured via the integrated rotary control also led to further savings: from 280 to 290 rpm at 100 rpm at full power, consumption was reduced to 1 watt – the level of a normal case fan in the form of 120 mm.

An advantage as a side part

Games tested the fan as an alternative to the glass side panel using the Nexus MSI Segra 500X. The site chose the case because it is a combination of expensive materials and “some of the worst design results we have ever seen”. As a result, the tower will trigger elements in the temperature range or above.

The processor temperature was observed in this awkward situation. On load testing, it reached a temperature of 67.8 degrees above room temperature. Without the side panel, this value dropped to 61.2 degrees, which was about 290 rpm at 48.2 degrees when the 500mm fan was fully switched on.

Idea for manufacturers

Such a fan does not have to be a clean mouth. It may seem grotesque, but it fits the trend: after years of providing more glass to homes, manufacturers are increasingly opening their towers in search of cooling performance – the final sector, considering the high consumption values, unnecessarily. Products such as Fractal Design Torrent witness such a turn. Replacing the glass side panels and installing a large-sized fan instead is not a novelty, but reveals old ideas used by Thermaltoc in the 2000s, but almost at the same time.
