Windows 11 is coming to an end and should be officially released on October 5th. But that does not mean that all Windows 10 installations will receive an immediate update.
Video transcript:
In this video I will explain to you how, after all, when will you get the final version of Windows 11 and most importantly: what are the fastest processors without long-term supporters?
Dear hackers, Dear web browsers, Welcome to ct 3003!
The final version of Windows 11 will appear on October 5, 2021 – or has already been released, depending on the time you watch the video, but the information should still be relevant after it is released. The most important question is of course: how to catch the first new Windows in 6 years? I have already created a video about how it is and what it can do.
Theoretically, Windows 11 comes as a free system update via the update functionality, but Microsoft certainly does not offer this thing from day one for all compatible Windows 10 installations. Not even a second: According to Microsoft, updates via the Windows Update menu will not start “until the end of 2021”, and for most devices the update must be provided “by the beginning of 2022”.
If you want to have Windows 11 already, you have two options: register with the Windows Insider program; You will receive an initial version before the official release on the “Release Preview” channel. Then you can exit the Windows Insider program, then the normal updates will come, so you can bring it back to a completely regular installation without any problems. It’s weird if you’re on the Dev channel – there was only an earlier version of Windows 11 here a few weeks ago. I had this painful experience: you can not switch from the Dev channel to the release version, but if you do not want to get the initial and potentially bug-version versions again you have to completely flatten the system. Sometimes there is a time window in which you can switch too, but unfortunately I missed it. In general, the downside of the Windows Insider program is that you have to send detailed diagnostic data to Microsoft without activating the Insider program. The update took me about an hour and a half: the first 45 minutes took place in the background, so you can work normally. The first boot process took another 50 minutes, during which time the system could not be used.
Another option called media generating tool. This is Microsoft’s software that allows you to not only manually upgrade an existing Windows system, but also use it to create installation data carriers; If you want to reinstall from scratch, for example. The Media Creation Tool for Windows 11 is due out on October 5th – so you can definitely upgrade it from there. Upgrading with the Media Creation tool is a bit more brutal than the normal Windows update process. This means that the sources of the potential error are not known in detail, but are beginning to improve. In our experience this is not a problem – however, you should back up important files in advance, but I also recommend this for the “normal” upgrade made with Windows Update.
You must check the compatibility beforehand, this can be done with a Microsoft program called PC Integrity Check. If this tool says: Let’s go, you’re on the safe side. But sometimes it does not show: the first complaint on my computer, for example, TPM 2.0 module is not activated. Christoph will explain to you later what it is. After all, most reasonable modern computers have such a module, but it is often not implemented by default. To do this, you need to go to the BIOS, or more precisely UEFI, when booting can be done with the Delete key, F2 or F12, depending on the mainboard. The whole thing through Intel-System is called Intel “Platform Trust Technology (PTT)” and security device support, AMD firmware TPM or fTPM and secure device support. It looks like this with my UEFI, but depending on the board manufacturer it may be on a different menu. Additionally, secure boot must be enabled in UEFI, but this is usually enabled by default. Safe boot is only available in so-called UEFI mode – not in the old CSM mode. Even if your board is actually mastered in UEFI, if it runs in CSM mode, you can change it backwards – it’s a bit brittle because I did not attach an article to you in the description.
Otherwise, according to Microsoft you need: 4GB RAM, 64GB disk or SSD space and a clock with at least one GHz dual core processor. Seems complicated at first, AAAAAAABER is now big sad: Microsoft does not support many older CPUs, although they are actually faster than dual core with 1 GHz. Thumb rule: If your processor is released in 2018 or later, Windows 11 will run on it. If he is older, you should check out the Microsoft website. Interestingly, many surface systems that come directly from Microsoft are not even supported. Especially in times of climate change and a shortage of chips, this is definitely pretty silly: you have a computer that is really fast – and you can’t upgrade to the latest version of Windows.
How can that be? This is a question you often ask on the channel about our first Windows 11 video, so I asked ct hardware expert Christophe Windek:
[Interview mit Christof Windeck]
In a nutshell: Additional security precautions really make sense, after all, so-called zero-day exploits can be used to manipulate Windows from the outside. But why these arbitrary processor lists?
You can theoretically upgrade to Windows 11 with an unsupported processor using the Media Creation tool. AAABER: We do not recommend it at this time because it is unclear whether you will receive security updates. Windows should not be used without the latest security updates. Then it’s better to be with Windows 10, because you will definitely get security updates until support ends on October 14, 2025. If the whole Windows 11 hype annoys you anyway: you can confidently stay with Windows 10 because it also gets new features like direct storage, which allows future games to load data faster on the graphics card. So it’s not so wild, Windows 11 is so beautiful – anyway, if you look different (or like me) I would like to comment. Definitely tell everyone about ct 3003, subscribe and click the bell – bye!
