After Microsoft recently released its financial statements with great results for the Xbox brand, this August 1 was the time for Sony to reveal the official numbers of the PlayStation in its first quarter of fiscal year 2017, which covers the period between April 1 and June 30, 2017.

In all, 63.3 million units of the console were shipped, and about 3 million were shipped to the stores. Below you can check these numbers in more detail, highlighting the fact that despite the excellent result, sales of the PS4 fell compared to the first quarter of the previous year when Sony shipped 3.5 million units.

As in the rival, sales of the ‘Game & Network Services’ division continued to grow, increasing 5.4%. That is, even if it is surrounded by recent controversies like the increase of prices and the restriction of free games , online services like PS Plus, PS Store and others represents more and more source of profit.

Another highlight of the report is the company’s operating income (total revenue less taxes and financial charges), which stood at ¥17.7 billion, a significant drop of ¥26.3 billion compared to the same period last year.

Among the main reasons for this is a period of great releases such as the launch of ” Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End ” in May and also the price drop of PS4 since, negatively affecting the revenues of the games division of Sony.

What remained to be unveiled were the PlayStation VR numbers, the brand’s virtual reality device, which we heard about recently when Sony’s chief executive Jim Ryan revealed that more than 915,000 units had been sold by February 19, 2017.

Sony announced last week that it will increase its PlayStation Plus subscription service value, which from September on will be more expensive in all modes.

The Japanese company also said that the goal will be to sell 78 million consoles until March 31, 2018, meaning it aims to sell 14.7 million PS4 in the next eight months.
