After betting on Google software on its big debut in the smartphone market in 2014 with “Gear Live”, Samsung had already confirmed in 2016 that it was not interested in launching new Android Wear devices in the wearables segment.
Since then the South Korean giant uses its own system in its wearable gadgets, the Tizen OS. It is worth remembering that Samsung’s platform is already being used in smart devices connected to the smart homes market. Therefore, the company’s decision to keep the ecosystem closed within its own software makes perfect sense for the future.
According to a research by Strategy Analytics reproduced by Tizen Experts, but you cannot celebrate a very expressive victory against the rival system, since the difference between the Tizen and Android Wear is only around 1%. However, it is an important fact for the Tizen platform, since the end of 2015 this is the first time that the proprietary system of Samsung exceeds Android Wear in market share.
The win is even tastier when we retake the 2015 ranking: in it, Tizen was only the fifth, behind Pebble OS and RTOS, having only 6% of market and with prospects of almost disappearing until 2019. Samsung should bet more and more on Tizen for devices that are not the company’s top smartphones. Internet Products of Things, some cell phones and wearables already have this platform of their own.
The greatest leader of the smartwatch market is still Apple Watch. Apple’s smart watches represent a slice of nearly 60% of this device segment. Although Android Wear did not make significant gains, Tizen rose from 6.7% to 19% in the last two years alone. This represents a growth of more than 12%. The data are from the first quarter of 2017 and indicate an interesting market trend. Although Samsung is just a manufacturer, it has released several models of watches for different audiences – and they have received more attention from models like Asus, Huawei and LG, for example.
