■Introduction to the event 4 areas full of individuality
The grounds open to the public are divided into four zones, each with its own unique events. Here, we will present some of them.
◆E area
Area E is closest to the entrance, and hosts tours where Dr. Rocket explains the actual H-II rocket, the symbol of the Tsukuba Space Center, as well as events where you can casually talk about space in sign language or written communication.
In particular, the “Central Control Room Tracking Tour”, which is held only on special opening days and monitors the satellite 365 days a year, is a must-see.
C area
Area C has the largest number of events and is recommended for people interested in manufacturing, including satellites. Experiments for inserting monitoring devices for the “GOSAT-GW” satellite, which will be launched on board the last H-IIA rocket in 2024, and a character (EarthCARE-chan) similar to the “EarthCARE” satellite that was launched in May 2024, and a project will be held to talk about it.
A stamp pool for satellite-related events will also be held in Area C, and if you collect them all, you can exchange them for prizes.
◆S area
Area S is full of events related to satellite research, development and testing, including exhibitions where you can see real small satellites developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency up close, and satellite assembly and testing sites open to the public.
The temporary exhibition room created in conjunction with the closure of the Space Dome exhibition hall at Tsukuba Space Center is also open to the public for this year only, and is a must-see as there are exhibits that can only be seen here.
◆ W area
Events related to manned space activities will be held in Area W, including a basic training report session for astronaut candidates and an exhibition on the new space station supply vehicle (HTV-X) scheduled for launch at the end of 2024.
In addition, an event will be held titled “3 Types of Control Rooms for Manned Sector Operations” where you can tour the control rooms of Japan’s Kibo Experiment Module, HTV-X, and the Lunar Polar Explorer LUPEX all at once. Why not take advantage of this great opportunity?
In this article, we introduced the Tsukuba Space Center's special open day which will be held on October 26 (Saturday). On the day of the event, cafeterias and shops will sell snacks and souvenirs, and there will be breakout areas available, so you can enjoy the festival atmosphere. Please note that parking at the center is limited and a free shuttle bus will be running from Tsukuba Station on the day of the event, so we recommend arriving by public transportation.
