GPDThe “GPD WIN 4 (2023)” is a gaming UMPC that uses a Ryzen 7040 series CPU, a 6-inch display, and a slide-out keyboard. This time, I borrowed a sample of the low-end model equipped with a Ryzen 5 7640U CPU, so I would like to briefly introduce it and roughly compare it with the traditional “GPD WIN 4”.
As you can see from the fact that “(2023)” is added after the product name, this product is a later model of GPD WIN 4, and the CPU has been changed from the previous Ryzen 7 6800U to Ryzen 5 7640U or Ryzen 7 7840U. change.
In addition, the CPU architecture has changed from Zen 3+ generation to Zen 4 generation, and performance has been improved. At the same time, the GPU architecture has also been updated from RDNA 2 to RDNA 3, improving efficiency and performance.
The model I borrowed this time is a lower-end model with a Ryzen 5 7640U processor, with a 6-core/12-thread CPU and an operating clock of 3.5 to 4.9 GHz. GPU specifications are Radeon 760M with 8 CUs (512 shaders). However, as you can see from the PCMark 10 and 3DMark results, 3DMark performance is not as good as before, and surprisingly the PCMark scores are higher than before.
Another issue is that an OCuLink port is provided instead of a USB 3.0 port. As an OCuLink compatible product, GPD provides the “G1” external GPU docking station to meet users’ needs to further improve graphics performance.
However, if you want to connect your video card with OCuLink, you have to purchase a conversion board and power supply separately, which is somewhat difficult. It also has many inconveniences, such as the inability to supply power to the main unit such as Thunderbolt 4 (USB4), and the lack of support for hot plugs. Therefore, OCuLink is still suitable for advanced users. Although USB 3.0 (Type A) is no longer available, a USB Type C → Type A conversion adapter is now included, so you can use it if necessary.
Although GPD WIN 4 (2023) has not evolved much from the previous model, users who purchased the previous model do not have to rush to replace it. On the other hand, the Ryzen 7040 series was announced before the GPD WIN 4 was released in Japan, so this might be a good opportunity for users who have postponed purchasing it.
